Renewable Energy Program
E
dison Sault’s renewable energy program allows customers, who agree to pay a higher rate, to have an increased percentage of their electricity generated from renewable sources.  As mentioned earlier, Edison Sault generates and purchases about 27% of our power needs from hydro facilities located in the St. Marys river.  The remaining 83% of our power needs are purchased from other utilities.  This power is mostly generated using coal and nuclear power generation sources.  Customers wishing to have more than 27% of their energy coming from renewable sources are able to voluntarily increase the percentage of their power that is derived from renewable resources to levels of 60%, 80%, or 100%.  The added cost to residential customers choosing 100% renewable energy is an approximate 20% increase over their regular billing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Renewable Energy
There are many terms being used these days to describe an environmentally friendly electric power source  green power, renewable power, and clean power to name just a few.  Edison Sault customers currently receive about 27% of their power from the Edison Sault powerhouse and the Corps of Engineers hydro plant located in the St. Marys rapids.  These hydroelectric facilities are powered by a “renewable” energy source – the water flowing out of Lake Superior.  Renewable energy is electricity that is generated from renewable resources, such as wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and geothermal sources.

Contact information

What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy is electricity that is generated from renewable resources, such as wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and geothermal sources.

Back to Questions and Answers

Where does Edison Sault currently get electricity?

Edison Sault's renewable energy program recognizes that approximately 27% of the required power for our customers is met by the generation from the Edison Sault hydro plant and the U. S. Corp of Engineers hydro plant in Sault Ste. Marie. The remaining 83% of the required power supply is purchased under contracts with We Energies and Consumers Energy.

Back to Questions and Answers

How does Edison Sault's renewable energy program work?

Edison Sault's renewable energy program allows customers, who agree to pay a higher rate, to have an increased percentage of their electric usage obtained from renewable sources. Under Edison Sault's program, customers can select to have 60%, 80%, or 100% of their electric requirements obtained from renewable energy.

Back to Questions and Answers

Where will Edison Sault get the additional renewable energy?

Edison Sault will purchase the additional renewable energy under its joint operating power supply agreement with We Energies. We Energies has an existing renewable program whereby it obtains renewable energy from a variety of sources, such as wind, small hydro and biomass operations. Edison Sault will purchase that renewable energy as it is needed on a month-to-month basis.

Back to Questions and Answers

Will the renewable energy be generated in the Edison Sault service area?

Not necessarily. The renewable energy could be generated wherever it is feasible. By identifying, or tagging, the source of the generation, We Energies and Edison Sault will be able to document that sufficient renewable energy has been obtained to meet the demands of the customers participating under the renewable energy program.

Back to Questions and Answers

Can we be assured that the renewable energy will actually be transmitted to the specific location of the customer who signs up for the program?

This we cannot do, because electricity, however it is produced, flows by the laws of physical nature. We can assure that in total, we have purchased as much renewable energy as has been requested.

Back to Questions and Answers

Who can sign up for the renewable energy program?

All Edison Sault customers who are willing to pay a premium on their electric usage can sign up for renewable energy. They can get enrolled by contacting the main office at 906-632-5141 or toll free at 877-254-8233.

Back to Questions and Answers

How much extra will participating customers pay?

The premium will vary depending on the percentage of renewable power selected. The premium is 1.22 cents per kWh for customers electing to have 100% of their usage generated from renewable sources. A residential customer participating at the 100% level who uses 1,000 kWh a month will pay an additional $12.20, which represents a 20% premium over Edison Sault's regular rate. Those participating at the 60% level will pay a premium of 0.41 cents per kWh, while those participating at the 80% level will pay a premium of 0.82 cents per kWh.

Back to Questions and Answers

Why should a customer sign up for this renewable energy program?

It permits those customers who sign up to demonstrate their support for renewable energy through their own financial support.
