Edison Sault Advises Boaters of Fluctuating Water Flows Edison Sault Electric Company advises boaters, fisherman and shippers to be aware of fluctuating water flow conditions associated with changing output levels at its hydroelectric plant in Sault Ste. Marie. The changing output levels will be necessary to accommodate a maintenance project involving Edison Sault’s power canal in Sault Ste. Marie. The hydro plant will be changing its normal generation schedule to permit the installation of sheet piling in Edison Sault’s power canal in an area above the headgates. A contractor, Ryba Marine, has been hired to install sheet piling on the south side of the power canal to reinforce the canal walls. Next year, Ryba Marine is scheduled to do a similar project on the north side of the power canal. The projects are typical of the types of projects that Edison Sault identifies to maintain its power canal in good working order. Normal hydro plant operations provide for peak water releases during weekdays (7 AM to 9 PM) and reduced flows during nights and certain hours of the weekends. While the maintenance project is underway, Edison Sault will be changing its water flows for a much reduced daytime flow, and then increasing to a normal water flow at the end of each of the construction company’s workdays. The change in schedules is expected to start on Friday morning, September 24, and continue for a period of about two weeks. Boaters, fisherman, shippers, and others on the water either immediately behind or below the Edison Sault hydro plant should be aware and prepared for changing water flow conditions. Shippers using the St. Marys River system should keep in contact with the U.S. Corp of Engineers, which has been advised of the scheduled timing of water releases. ***
