Edison Sault Reduces Power Supply Costs, Participates in Michigan Energy Optimization Program

Edison Sault Electric Company announced today that lower costs of fuel contained in purchased power billings have enabled Edison Sault to reduce the Power Supply Cost Recovery (PSCR) factor which is included in its billings to customers.  The reduction for lower fuel costs follows a PSCR reduction made in March to recognize the improved hydroelectric conditions from the levels experienced over the past couple years.

Edison Sault also announced that it will be participating in a statewide energy optimization program that will encourage customers to conserve energy.  The program is being implemented as a result of legislation passed in 2008 addressing renewable energy resources and the conservation of energy.  The energy optimization program will be conducted by a state selected administrator that is expected to promote conservation and the use of high efficiency energy appliances.  The cost of administering the conservation program will be borne by utility customers as a separate surcharge that will be included beginning with their July 2009 bills for utility service.  The monthly charge for Edison Sault’s residential customers will be based upon kilowatthour usage and will cost customers $1.17 per 1,000 kilowatthours used.  Commercial and industrial customers will have a charge per meter on their bills.

The PSCR reduction for most of Edison Sault’s customers is scheduled to more than offset the increase for the energy optimization surcharge.  A residential customer using 1,000 kWh a month will see an overall reduction of $3.61 per month, or 4% on their electric bills.  Edison Sault’s residential rates were already 14% below the average charged by other Michigan electric companies. The changes being announced will make Edison Sault’s rates even more attractive when compared to other companies.

Edison Sault engages in electricity generation and distribution to 23,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Michigan 's Eastern Upper Peninsula . Edison Sault generates and sells low-cost power from the company's historic hydro plant and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' hydro plant, both located on the St. Marys River system at Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
