Average Operating Costs for Electric Appliances
The appliance operating costs shown are averages and will not be exactly the same as your costs. They do, however, provide you with a basis for estimating the operating costs of your own electrical appliances and equipment. By knowing how much each appliance costs to operate, you can concentrate your conservation efforts where they will provide the greatest return. Most electric appliances cost just pennies a month to operate and deliver real value by reducing drudgery and making your home safer and more comfortable. If you're looking for ways to conserve electricity, we suggest you start with the big users. You can save a lot more, for example, by lowering the temperature setting on your water heater than you can by cutting back on television watching. We gathered our average appliance usage and wattage data from appliance manufacturer's specifications, our own Company studies, and the Michigan Department of Commerce Energy Administration. Operating cost estimates are based on an average charge of 7.0 cents per kWh. The actual charge per kWh could be higher or lower depending on: 1) how much electricity you use in a given month, and 2) the energy rate you are on.
